Woodwork Basics: Planing, Mortice & Tenon Joints

In these sessions you’ll develop your skills in hand planing timber, followed by the cutting of accurate mortice and tenon joints. These sessions will develop your marking out, sawing, chiseling skills, and set you on the path to making your own furniture designs. The sessions are suitable for beginners, combining group demonstration and one-to-one tuition.

About Woodwork Basics:

This workshop is one of our series for complete beginners. Each course introduces a different set of carpentry skills and an explanation of simple joinery. They aim to get you comfortable with using a range of basic hand tools and techniques so you can get started in the workshop. Once you’ve completed these basics, you can move onto our follow up series which takes these skills into the construction of built furniture projects.

This course will be led by our technician Toby Poolman, our resident wood technician. Toby originally trained as a furniture designer/maker, and has since worked as furniture maker, timber-framed building craftsman and college lecturer.
