3D Printing Inductions: Learn How to Utilise & Commercialise the Technology

INDUCTION TO 3D PRINTING | June 21st or July 12th | Tuesday 2PM | FREE

The induction is for everyone, you do not need to have experience with CAD or 3D Printing to attend.

We will discuss:

  • What is available in 3D Printing
  • How to get your money’s worth, and how to “pack” 3D Printing for quantity
  • How to apply it to a commercial product (especially fashion and product design)
  • Discuss Materials, Processes, and Finishes
  • Show examples of work produced with Digits2Widgets
  • Reveal our experience with emerging and major brands (including Burberry, Ron Arad (pq Eyewear), Kerrie Luft and OlgaFacesRok)
  • Dissect the press you’ve read about 3D Printing, and expose what is Fantasy, Future, and Reality
  • Talk about what questions you should ask when deciding to 3D Print (ie: Is my design worth being 3D Printed, or just a mould or prototype? Is it going to be heavy or sharp? How can you amplify the design to actually utilise the technology?)
  • What our workshops will offer, and what you should be designing

Throughout the induction, feel free to ask questions. At the end of the event, we will talk to people who have already signed up for workshops.

WORKSHOP BRIEF: The workshop has been organised for you, to learn how to design a 3D Printed object, that can be scaled up for a commerical product. We are looking for you to design ONE of the below items:

  • Buttons
  • Zipper Pulls
  • Footwear Appliques
  • Textile Appliques (beads, textures, etc.)
  • Beads
  • Moulds
  • Jewellery or Small Accessories
  • Homeware/Lifestyle Accessories
  • Small Moulds

Please produce atleast 1 to 3 designs in CAD, that you would want multiple of. You will have to make sure they can fit in a Size 1 Container, and we can discuss the quantity of replication. View specifications and files here.

Of course these suggestions are optional, but they are the most realistic items you can 3D Print today, and get your money’s worth. We will show you examples of what’s possible on the induction day, but please design something in advance so you can sign up for the workshop in time.

Remember: The more you get out of a single 3D print, the more realistic a design/fashion collection’s price margin will be. Design one or more small objects that you would want multiple of.

University Students: Please utilise this workshop for your portfolios.

Professionals: This is an invaluable opportunity to see how you can prototype for next season’s collections.

WORKSHOP: CONSULTATION | August 10th, 2016 | Wed 1-6pm | £50 + Booking Fee

For the workshop, you are required to show up with a CAD file. You have to have CAD knowledge or atleast have someone that is producing the files for you. You also must have attended the induction.

The size print you will receive is a Container Size 1 worth £40. The £10+ in additional fees are for the consultation, and booking fees. Files will be checked with the individuals by our team before sending to print.

We’ve tried to make this as affordable as possible, as many workshops can cost hundreds to thousands of £ Pounds. The additional £10 for consultancy, is 5% of our hourly rate. Please respect our time.

You can also find someone who is more advanced in CAD to collaborate. We reccomended product designers, architects, jewellery designers, and even fine art graduates (they’re taught CAD at CSM).

WORKSHOP: FILE SUBMISSION | August 17th, 2016 | Wed 11am-1pm, 2-4pm

This is the deadline to submit your final files for print in person or digitally, for Container Size 1. Files will be checked with the individuals by our team before sending to print.

FINAL WORKSHOP & PICK UP | August 31st, 2016 | Wednesday 5PM – Onwards | Location TBA

We will talk about what you’ve produced, and critique it. Then chat about:

  • How to up scale it up for mass production
  • How to market it, so the consumer gets excited about how the technology has been used
  • Where you could improve on your design
  • How it can be finished from here on out (smoothing, glazing, etc.)
  • What is to come with 3D Printing, and how to be at the forefront
  • How to promote these skills to major brands
  • Future Consumer Customisation, Design limitation & Omnichannel Integration

We will give you your final printed product, at the beginning of the session.

We have created this event, because we believe that 3D Printing is not being utilised properly for fashion, and no one really knows how to apply it to a commercial product. We believe you, emerging designers, are the future because you have the freedom today, to develop your skills. As university and other workshops are incredibly expensive, and there is no proper knowledge of what is available to designers, we are trying to keep this as affordable as possible. Please note the refund policy for paid tickets. As we are booking time out of our work day in advance to support you, we require compensation and have cancellation fees.

Is my registration/ticket transferrable? Yes it is. You can either update your registration information, or email us in advance.

Can I update my registration information? Yes.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? No, we will have a list of people at the door.

What is the refund policy?  The INDUCTION is FREE. The WORKSHOP is £50. This workshop is incredibly affordable, as every other 3D Printing workshop available today, is £500-£1000. If you cancel before the induction, we will refund £40 of your paid ticket, £10 is your holding deposit. If you cancel 1 week before or during the workshop, we will not refund you. As we are booking time out of our work day in advance, to support you, the industry, we require compensation. You are also taking spots from other professionals. Our goal at the end of the workshop, is for you to have 3D printed objects you can actually use. If for some reason, your design is completely unprintable by the end of the workshop, we will refund you the printing fee, for £40. £40 is the total cost of the 3D Printing, and £10 covers our consultations.
