London pubs have become labs in recent years for startups attempting to revolutionise the way they work. You have to admit that there’s opportunity there, with every pub overflowing most of the week. Apps like Orderella want to let you “beat the queue” with their drink ordering app. One From Me has gone down a different road – drink gifting.
The Android and iPhone app will let users send vouchers to friends who can redeem them at their local pub. Vouchers are priced at £5 and the recipient can order any drink, whether a pint, spirit, wine or soft drink.
Recipients are simply required to present their phone to the bartender who approve the purchase and pour the pint.
To remove complexity and reduce cost pubs don’t need any expensive hardware behind the bar, relying only on the customer’s mobile to accept the order. Each month One From Me issues a report to the pub detailing the number of sales the app drove to the pub and generates revenue by taking a cut of sales.
Director Peter Masters says that there’s nothing technical from the pub’s point of view. They see it as a normal promotion, much like giving out flyers for free drinks. Pubs should see an increase in sales since most people don’t go to the pub on their own for one pint but tend to take people along and have a couple. He says that the app will bring in customers, opposed to just serving those already there.
