Many Google+ users are put off by the amount of notifications and messages they receive, especially since they’re alerted every time they visit Google. The settings to rectify this are all over the place, so here’s a cheat sheet to find them.

Receiving notifications and Messenger messages

Login and navigate to  https://www.google.com/settings/plus?tab=4. From here you can stop certain circles or the public sending you notifications or messages via Messenger (Messenger isn’t Google Talk, we’ll do that one later). At the bottom of the page you can check/ uncheck which notifications you want to receive via email.

Receiving Google Talk instant messages

This is the trickiest one to find. On the Google+ homepage, at the bottom of the left sidebar is the instant messenger. Sign in to it, click the arrow at the top right and then ‘Privacy Settings’. From here you can limit which circles can IM you.
